The heating of a fluid in a pipe by means of steam or electrical heating elements. The fluid may have a relatively low melting point such as bitumen and is required to remain in the liquid state to prevent it from solidifying and blocking the pipe. The trace heating consists of an internal pipe carrying the steam, which runs down the centre of the pipe carrying the fluid to provide sufficient heat transfer that prevents solidification.
