Symbol L. The luminous intensity of any surface in a given direction per unit projected area of the surface, viewed from that direction. It is given by the equation L=dI/(dAcosθ‎), where I is the luminous intensity and θ‎ is the angle between the line of sight and the normal to the surface area A being considered. It is measured in candela per square metre.
