Any system for industrial and manufacturing process control based on a computer with dedicated input/output devices. Designed to replace relay-based control systems, PLCs are robust and reliable, and so capable of tolerating the harsh conditions found in manufacturing plants. There are standardized specialized programming languages for PLCs, most of which are diagrammatic in nature.
