A condition in which all the overhead product from a distillation column is returned back to the column as reflux. On a McCabe–Thiele diagram, increasing the reflux ratio moves the operating lines of both stripping and rectifying sections away from the equilibrium line reducing the number of theoretical plates required to bring about a desired separation until they follow the 45^º diagonal. This corresponds to the minimum number of trays required in the column for the separation.
