A biochemical or biotechnological process such as fermentation in which all the nutrients apart from oxygen are placed in the bioreactor at the start of the operation. The fermentation is inoculated with microorgansims such as yeast or bacteria and the (p. 28) biological reaction is allowed to proceed until completion whereby a limiting substrate or nutrient is depleted. It is at this point that the product is usually harvested.
