Low-latitude zone of convergence at the boundary between north-easterly and south-easterly trade winds. Convergence causes air to rise (see hadley cell), producing a region of low pressure, the equatorial trough, and resulting in strong convection and heavy precipitation, mainly in the ocean sectors. The ITCZ moves latitudinally with the seasons. See intertropical confluence.
