The release and consolidation of debris from a glacier. Lodgement of particles occurs when the frictional drag between a particle and the glacier bed exceeds the shear stress resulting from the moving ice. The latter aligns fragments of this debris, known as lodgement till, in the same direction as the flow of the glacier. Ruszczyńska-Szenajch (2001) Quat. Sci. Revs 20, 4 distinguishes between hard lodgement till for deposits released from a glacier sole mainly due to friction, and soft lodgement till for sediments released from the base of a glacier due to the melting of ice in a more water-saturated subglacial environment.
