The part of a beach between the ordinary limit of high tides and the point reached by the very highest tides. On cliffed coastlines, the backshore is the section of cliff foot and shore platform affected only by storm tides; on low, shingle coasts it can take the form of a berm. Udo and Yamawaki (2007) Geomorph. 60, 1–2 find that waves have larger effects than winds on backshore sedimentation.
