Jenkins was both an undergraduate and a post-graduate of UCL, gaining his PhD (supervised by Johnson) in 1956. His knowledge of the theoretical side of the analysis of time series was augmented by practical insights gained from two years at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. In 1957 he joined the Statistics faculty at IC. From 1965 to 1974 he was Professor of Systems Engineering at Lancaster U. He was co-author with Box of the influential 1970 book Time Series Analysis: Forecasting and Control, which set out what is now referred to as the Box–Jenkins procedure.
