A small, usually slender, freshwater fish with tiny scales, no teeth, and typically three to six pairs of barbels, used to locate invertebrate prey on the bottom. There are more than 200 species, comprising the family Cobitidae, one native to North Africa, three to Europe, and the remainder to central and southern Asia. Some are popular as aquarium fish.
