His history of Rome from its foundation to his own time contained 142 books, of which 35 survive (including the earliest history of the war with Hannibal). Livy is notable for his power of vivid historical reconstruction as he sought to give Rome a history that in conception and style might be worthy of her imperial rise and greatness.
