A 15-m radio telescope opened in 1987 at an altitude of 4092 m at the Mauna Kea Observatories, Hawaii. Originally owned jointly by the UK, Canada, and the Netherlands, it was transferred in 2015 to the University of Hawaii and is now operated by the East Asian Observatory, a consortium of institutes in Taiwan, China, South Korea, and Japan, in collaboration with UK and Canadian universities. The JCMT is designed to work at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths (1.4 to 0.4 mm). It is named after J. C. Maxwell.
