A type of cataclysmic variable with irregular brightness fluctuations, exhibiting the spectra typical of a hot star (20 000 K), a cool star (3000 K), and extended nebulosity excited by radiation from the hot component; abbr. ZAND. Interaction occurs either through mass transfer or a stellar wind from the cool giant secondary. Currently, a heterogeneous collection of objects is classified by this type (often known as symbiotic stars), including the symbiotic novae (RR Telescopii stars), and stars with an accretion disk and jets, such as R Aquarii.
