A series of parameters that control the waveform envelope of a sound produced by an electronic musical instrument. When a note starts, for example by depressing a key, its amplitude rises to a level and over a time set by the attack parameter, then it falls over a time set by the decay parameter to the sustain level (see diagram). This level is maintained until the note stops, for example by releasing the key, when the amplitude falls to zero over a time set by the release parameter. The waveform structure corresponds broadly with that observed for a range of acoustic instruments.
