A form of laser scanning coupled with distance measurement based on time of flight. When deployed in an aircraft with a GPS receiver, lidar can be used for a variety of high-resolution surveying and mapping applications. The technology can also be used for collision avoidance systems for vehicles and robots. See also laser range finding.
