who worked at Harvard. He is remembered for his work in organic synthesis, producing many organic compounds including quinine, cholesterol, cortisone, lysergic acid, strychnine, chlorophyll, and vitamin B₁₂. In 1965 he and Roald Hoffmann formulated the Woodward–Hoffmann rules for certain types of addition reactions. Woodward was awarded the 1965 Nobel Prize for chemistry.
