单词 Liberal Democrats
释义
Liberal Democrats

World History
  • A British political party that adopted this name in 1989. The party, which was formed in 1988, was formerly known as the Social and Liberal Democrats. The Social and Liberal Democrats were a merger of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Liberal Party. The SDP itself was established by four dissident members of the Labour Party (Roy Jenkins, David Owen, Shirley Williams, and William Rodgers), known as the ‘gang of four’. As a new centre party, the SDP under David Owen’s leadership, formed an alliance with the Liberal Party. However, after a poor showing in the 1987 election, the SDP voted to merge with the Liberal Party, to form the Social and Liberal Democrats. David Owen attempted to revive a reduced SDP in 1988 but wound it up in 1990.

Paddy Ashdown (1941–2018), leader of the Liberal Democrats from 1988 to 1999, managed to substantially increase the number of Liberal Democrat MPs in the 1997 election. Ashdown was succeeded as leader by Charles Kennedy (1959–2015), under whom further gains were made in the 2001 and 2005 elections. However, Kennedy was forced to resign in 2006 after admitting a problem with alcohol. He was succeeded by Sir Menzies Campbell (1941– ) in 2006 and Nick Clegg (1967– ) in 2007. Following the 2010 general election the Liberal Democrats entered government for the first time, as junior partners in a coalition with the Conservative Party. In this role they supported the government’s programme of ‘austerity' economics, while tempering more radical Conservative polices in other areas. As a result, the Party lost trust over some major policy reversals and in the 2015 general election, its support evaporated, leaving it with just eight MPs. Clegg resigned as leader and was replaced by Tim Farron (1970– ), who in 2017 was succeeded by Sir Vince Cable (1943- ). Under Cable the Liberal Democrats moved to a position of demanding a second referendum on the UK’s decision to leave the European Union. Jo Swinson (1970- ) became the Party’s first woman leader in 2019 but lost her seat in the general election later that year. She was succeeded by Sir Ed Davey in August 2020.
