An observatory at an altitude of 4146 m on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, the site of the twin 10-m Keck Telescopes which have main mirrors consisting of 36 hexagonal segments. Keck I was completed in 1992 and Keck II in 1996. The two telescopes are sited 85 m apart and can be used as an optical interferometer. The observatory and telescopes are owned and operated by the California Association for Research in Astronomy (CARA), a partnership between the University of California, the California Institute of Technology, and NASA. Construction of the observatory and telescopes was funded by the W. M. Keck Foundation, a charitable organization, after which they are named.
