  • A statement that is claimed to be true. When placed within a program, an assertion indicates what the programmer thinks is a true statement about the behaviour of the program at that place: this is exploited in the Floyd method for proving program correctness.

Logic

  • In deductive systems with a conjunction connective ∧ and a conditional connective →, describes either the axiom scheme:

    • • φ→((φ→ψ)→ψ)

    or the scheme:

    • • (φ∧(φ→ψ))→ψ.

    The latter version of assertion resembles an axiomatic representation of modus ponens and is thus also known as pseudo modus ponens.

Philosophy

  • The action of putting forward some statement or proposition as true. Also, the statement or proposition thus put forward. Frege noticed the crucial point that what is asserted can also be put forward not as assertion, but as a supposition or hypothesis, as possibly true, and so on. This is not true, for instance, in animal signalling systems. See also assertoric, Frege-Geach argument.
