The common name for members of three species and several subspecies of horses (Equus), which are odd-toed, hooved ungulates (order Perissodactyla) of the family Equidae. Generally smaller than the domestic horse, asses have long ears, a coarse mane and tail, a straight back, and a reputation for strength and stamina. The domesticated donkey is E. africanus asinus, Asian wild asses are various subspecies of E. hemionus, and the kiang or Tibetan wild ass, the largest of the asses, is E. kiang, with four subspecies.
