A wave where the displacement occurs in a plane perpendicular to the direction of the wave’s propagation. Electromagnetic waves, surface waves on a fluid, and vibrations on a drum or stringed instrument are examples. See longitudinal wave.

A wave in which the displacement at each point along the wave is in a direction perpendicular to the direction of propagation. An electromagnetic wave is an example of a transverse wave. See alsomode.
