A star with a surface temperature cooler than the Sun, with a spectral type K, M, C, or S; G stars are often included as well. Late-type stars can be either of low mass, if they are on the main sequence, or more massive than the Sun if they are giants or supergiants. The designation ‘late’ derives from the time when it was wrongly thought that stars with K or M spectra were old and evolved. See also early-type star.
