A NASA experimental satellite that uses millimetre-wavelength radar to measure the vertical structure of clouds and cloud properties from space, providing information that increases the accuracy of storm and flood warnings as well as an improved understanding of climatic change. CloudSat launched in 2006, flies in orbital formation as part of the A-Train constellation of satellites. The spacecraft’s radar systems are performing nominally; On 26 August 2017, CloudSat flew over Tropical Storm Harvey as the storm was nearly stationary over south Texas, and studied it in 3D. Its data were used to study the storm’s strength of the energy as well as to determine how much water or ice was contained in the cloud. CloudSat successfully exited the A-Train on 22 February 2018. While CloudSat’s science mission will continue, it will no longer fly as part of the A-Train.

A NASA satellite that monitors clouds and their effect on weather and climate. It was launched together with CALIPSO on 28 April 2006 into a Sun-synchronous orbit at approximately 750 km altitude, and flies in formation with four other satellites, known as the A-Train. On 23 February 2018, managers lowered the satellite’s orbit following the loss of one of its reaction wheels, which control its orientation. The mission continues but is no longer part of the A-train.
