A large and usually hairy member of the suborder Mygalomorphae, comprising ground-dwelling spiders that build funnel-shaped webs. The hairs of some species can cause a rash similar to nettle rash in humans and the spiders can deliver a venomous bite, usually no worse than a wasp sting. There are many species, most occurring in the tropics, especially Australia.
