  • Any of various black semisolid mixtures of hydrocarbons and free carbon, produced by destructive distillation of coal or by petroleum refining.

  • A dark viscid substance obtained by the destructive distillation of organic matter such as coal, wood, or by petroleum refining. Coal tar fuels are produced by tar distillation and consist of either batch stills or pipe stills for continuous distillation. Tar oil is the product obtained from the distillation of coal tar.

  • A contraction of tape archive. A UNIX command that can make a number of files into a single archive file (with the extension ‘.tar’) or can extract files from an archive of this type. The data in a tar file is not compressed.
