An observatory at an altitude of 2380 m on Cerro Las Campanas, 110 km northeast of La Serena, Chile. It was founded in 1971, and is owned and operated by the Carnegie Institution for Science. It contains the 2.5-m Irénée du Pont Telescope, opened in 1976; the 1-m Henrietta Swope Telescope, opened in 1971; and the 1.3-m Warsaw University Observatory Telescope, opened in 1996. It is also the site of the twin 6.5-m Magellan Telescopes and the forthcoming Giant Magellan Telescope.
