A brightly coloured fish (family Lutjanidae), usually marine, up to about 1 m long, that feeds on other fish and crustaceans, seizing prey by snapping them with enlarged ‘canine’ teeth. There are 17 genera with 110 species found in tropical and subtropical waters. Some are popular game fish and edible, but may carry ciguatera poison.
