A gastropod that has an external shell into which it can withdraw its body. Terrestrial snails have a lung and breathe air; aquatic snails breathe with gills. A snail has two pairs of retractable tentacles, with the upper pair sensitive to light and the lower pair to scent. The underside comprises a muscular foot. Snails feed on a wide variety of material. There are very many species, found worldwide.
