A language is compositional if the meaning of complex expression is derivable from the meaning of its parts and the way in which they are combined. A compositional semantics would exhibit a way to derive the meaning of every well-formed construction (sentence) of a language from its composition. It was influentially argued by Davidson that it is only because languages are compositional that they are learnable.
