The capital of the ancient Khmer kingdom in north‐west Cambodia, famous for its temples, especially Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat (early 12th century), decorated with relief sculptures. Abandoned in 1443, the site was overgrown with jungle when it was rediscovered in 1860.
