Between 1252 and 1259 he conquered southern China with his brother Mangu (then Mongol Khan). On Mangu’s death in 1259 he was elected Khan himself, completing the conquest of China and founding the Yuan dynasty; he established his capital on the site of the modern Beijing. He successfully invaded Korea and Burma, but failed in attacks on Java and Japan.
