The Republic of Korea’s national aeronautics and space agency. Established on 10 October 1989, KARI’s purpose is to contribute to the nation’s economy and society through technological advancement, development, and dissemination in the field of aerospace science and technology. It is headquartered in Daejeon and has four major functions: (1) to conduct research and development in systems and core technology for aircraft, satellites, and space launch vehicles; (2) to support development of national aerospace policies, and supply, distribute, and disseminate information regarding aerospace technology; (3) to support collaboration with aerospace-related small and medium companies and the commercialization of technology; and (4) to provide research and development cooperation and technical outsourcing activities (with the government, private sector, corporate bodies, and other groups), as well as the training of professionals in the major mission fields.
Despite its short history, KARI has achieved significant accomplishments, having successfully secured advanced satellite technology for the development of multi-purpose satellites, including the KOMPSAT and STSAT series, as well as COMS. KARI also produced its first astronaut Soyeon Yi, developed the nation’s first space launch vehicle Naro, and established the NARO Space Center.
