A device for detecting muons and (particularly) neutrinos under the ice in Antarctica. This location was chosen to minimize background effects such as cosmic radiation in the atmosphere and radioactive decays in the earth. In the first decade of the 21st century AMANDA was replaced by the Ice Cube experiment.
