A phenomenon in which the atmosphere of a planet rotates independently of the surface. It is notable on Venus, where the top of the atmosphere rotates in 4 days, while the surface beneath rotates in 243 days. The cause of super-rotation is not well understood. Several interacting processes may be at work which transport momentum from the lower to the upper atmosphere.
