An owl (family Tytonidae), up to about 40 cm long, with a brown back, white breast, and distinctive white face. It occurs throughout most temperate and tropical regions, making it the most widely distributed of all owls. It is mainly nocturnal, but in a few places, including Britain, it also hunts by day.
