  • 1. Relating to or caused by a change in the environment or an individual organism brought about by some external factor. For example, the increased predation in a habitat caused by an immigrant predator would be described as allogenic. Compare autogenic.

    2. (allogeneic) Describing the variation that exists in the genotypes of different individuals, usually when these belong to the same species.


Geology and Earth Sciences
  • Applied to minerals, or other components of a rock, that have been derived from pre-existing rocks and transported some distance to form part of the present unit, e.g. quartz grains in a sandstone. Compare authigenic.


Geography
  • Caused externally. Thus, an allogenic stream is one—for example, the Nile—fed from outside the local area, where precipitation and run-off generate the flow. Allogenic succession is an alteration in a plant succession brought about by some external factor.
