An artificial-satellite unit made up of three wide-angle cameras to monitor bright X-ray sources. It rotates to scan 80% of the X-ray sky every 90 minutes, giving scientists an immediate image of any new phenomenon. Built by the Center for Space Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, ASM was aboard NASA's Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer, launched in December 1995.
