Compounds containing the ion R3S+ (sulphonium ion), where R is any organic group. Sulphonium compounds can be formed by reaction of organic sulphides with halogen compounds. For example, diethyl sulphide, C2H5SC2H5, reacts with chloromethane, CH3Cl, to give diethylmethylsulphonium chloride, (C2H5)2.CH3.S+Cl−.
