单词 Joule, James Prescott (1818–89)
释义
Joule, James Prescott (1818–89)

Physics
  • In 1840 he discovered the relationship between electric current passing through a wire, its resistance, and the amount of heat produced. In 1849 he gave an account of the kinetic theory of gases, and a year later announced his best-known finding, the mechanical equivalent of heat. Later, with William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), he discovered the Joule–Thomson effect.

Chemical Engineering
  • A British physicist who was the owner of a large brewery. Joule carried out much of his scientific work in his own private laboratory achieving a remarkably high standard of accuracy in his work. He stated a law about the heating effect of an electric current in 1840, and thereafter carried out a series of experiments to determine the mechanical equivalent of heat. His first determination of mechanical equivalent of heat was carried out with a calorimeter containing a rotating paddle. Together with Lord Kelvin, he discovered the Joule–Thomson effect in which there is a fall in temperature of a gas on expansion due to the attraction between molecules. The SI unit of energy is named after him.
