The UK currency. The name originated from the pound Easterling, formerly used in trade with the Baltic. The sterling area was an arrangement under which a number of Commonwealth countries pegged their exchange rates to sterling and held their foreign exchange reserves in London: this system declined after 1950. Sterling M3 was a measure of the UK money supply excluding balances held in London but in other currencies.
