A graduate of U Illinois (BA, 1924), Stephan gained his MA from U Chicago (1926) and joined the faculty of U Pittsburgh in 1927. After a spell at Cornell U, he joined the faculty at Princeton U in 1947, initially as Professor of Social Statistics in the Sociology department, subsequently transferring to the Statistics department. He was Editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association from 1935 to 1940. He collaborated with Deming on the 1940 paper that introduced the Deming–Stephan algorithm. He was President of the ASA in 1966.
