Nonconformist minister in Tunbridge Wells, England. Bayes was elected FRS in 1742. The eponymous theorem has led to the development of an approach to Statistics that runs parallel to the methods of hypothesis testing. This approach is referred to as Bayesian inference and its advocates are referred to as Bayesians. The theorem was contained in an essay not published until after Bayes’s death and was largely ignored at the time.
