An electronic logic gate that inverts the signal it receives so that a logic 1 (true) is converted to logic 0 (false) and vice versa. It therefore implements the logical NOT operation. The diagram shows the circuit symbol and truth table.

1. A device or circuit that converts direct current into alternating current.
2. (linear inverter) An amplifier that reverses the polarity of a signal, i.e. that introduces a 180° phase shift.
3. (digital inverter; NOT circuit) A logic circuit that inverts the level of the input signal, i.e. that produces a low output for a high input and vice versa.
