A mutiny by sailors of the British Atlantic Fleet at the naval port on Cromarty Firth, Scotland. Severe pay cuts imposed by the National government led the ratings to refuse to go on duty. The cuts were slightly revised but foreign holders of sterling were alarmed; an Act suspending the gold standard was rushed through Parliament, but the value of the pound fell by more than a quarter. The mutiny ended and the ratings’ ringleaders were discharged from the navy.
