A medium-sized bird (family Sturnidae), usually black or dark-coloured and often with an iridescent, blue, green, and bronze sheen. Starlings have straight bills, short tails, and strong feet. They are highly gregarious. They eat fruit and insects and inhabit open country. Some Asian starlings are known as mynas, and some African species are called glossy starlings. There are about 25 genera of up to 110 species found in Eurasia, Africa, Australia, and the Pacific islands, and they have been introduced elsewhere.
