单词 XMM-Newton
释义
XMM-Newton

Astronomy
  • An ESA satellite for X-ray astronomy, launched in 1999 December, named from its X-ray multi-mirror design and to honour Isaac Newton. It carries three grazing-incidence telescopes with CCD detectors for imaging and spectroscopy in the energy range 0.1–12 keV (120–1 nm), plus a 0.3-m telescope that checks for visual variability. XMM-Newton is in a highly elliptical 48-hour orbit to allow extended observations of sources.

Space Exploration
  • A European Space Agency (ESA) spacecraft launched in December 1999 to make simultaneous X-ray and optical observations of the sky. It carries three gold-coated imaging X-ray telescopes and an optical monitor, the first on an X-ray observatory. It has an expected lifetime of ten years and is the second cornerstone of the ESA's Horizon 2000 Science Programme. The spacecraft continues to make remarkable discoveries; in October 2017, for instance, XMM-Newton joined NASA probes in revealing that Jupiter’s aurorae behave unlike Earth’s, acting independently of one another.
