A type of galaxy which can only just be distinguished from stars on Schmidt camera sky survey plates. They have apparent diameters of 2–5″ and a region of high surface brightness that can be due either to a bright nucleus or a region of active star formation. Some 2000 such objects were catalogued by F. Zwicky from Palomar Observatory Sky Survey plates.
