When current flows through a small-area contact or point contact into a conductor or semiconductor of much larger dimensions, the charge carriers will rapidly spread out from the contact to produce a uniform current density in the material. In the region of uniform current density the resistance of the material can be described by Ohm’s law. In the region where the current flow is spreading from the point, the resistance is the spreading resistance. It is often included in the contact resistance.
