One of NASA's twin Mars Exploration rovers, launched on 10 June 2003. It landed on 4 January 2004 in the crater Gusev, which was once filled with a lake. No communication has been received from Spirit since 22 March 2010; NASA’s final attempt made on 24 May 2011 failed, and NASA called the mission complete. During its life, the rover imaged dust devils moving across the surface of Mars, and imaged Earth in the Martian sky—the first ever taken from the surface of another planet. Spirit covered about 7.7 km of Martian terrain. Among its several exciting discoveries, Spirit found evidence for past hydrothermal activity on Mars, as well as evidence that water flowed across its surface.
