A program that converts a sample of speech into a digital form suitable for transmission over a digital communications system. Many forms of speech coder are in common use, with bit rates from 300 bit/s to 128 kbit/s. A standard telephone channel uses 64 kbit/s, and a typical mobile phone uses around 12 kbit/s, with a corresponding drop in quality.
